Igor Niego

Born in Naples Igor Niego came early to music, studying the recorder. He carried out research in southern Italy on the frame drums , concentrating above all on the styles of Campania and is a connoisseur and expert player of the vast repertoire of styles and techniques of the frame drums of the Mediterranean and Middle East, a maker of drums and one of the most qualified teachers in Italy. Apart from percussion he has also studied different wind instruments (flutes and bagpipes) in Bulgaria and above all the gaida (bulgarian bagpipe) and the kaval. In ten years of musical training, besides various study-trips, he has taken part in seminars both in Italy and abroad with such masters as Glen Valez (USA) Djamchid Chemirani (Iran), Stephan Gallet (France), and Michael Metzler (Germany).
He has taught in the school of popular music “Ivan Illich” in Bologna and is currently teacher of percussion at the “School of popular music” in Forlimpopoli and holds percussion seminars all over Italy. He works as an educator in schools conducting musical workshops for children.
As well as being a founder member of Music Officinalis he is also a member of the groups “Al Qantarah” and “Theatrum Instrumentorum” with whom he is much occupied, performing nationally and internationally.
In 1998 he founded “Musica Officinalis” which occupies itself with cultural projects for the promotion, diffusion, pedagogy and didactics of music.
He has worked with the Neapolitan theatrical group “Liberamente” participating in the most important national festivals of theatre such as “Sant’Arcangelo dei Teatri” and “Angeli a Sud”, and shows of the CRT of Milan and Teatro Valle of Rome.
He has also collaborated with many other groups and on many musical projects among which are the workers group “E Zezi”, Ambrogio Sparagna, Moni Ovadia, “Taranta Power” di Eugenio Bennato, “Tabula Rasa” and “Leo Gullotta”.
He has been co-curator of seminars on drums and traditional dance in Campania with the association cultural “L’Intrecciata” of Naples.
